Understanding Stock Trading Costs

When buying and selling shares in Hong Kong, trading costs are an important factor beyond the share price movement. Stock trading costs include brokerage commission, stamp duty, transaction levy, trading fee, AFRC transaction levy and share settlement fees. Although each individual charge may be small, they can add up and significantly erode returns for frequent short-term traders.

Hong Kong stock transactions are subject to 0.1% stamp duty on both the buyer and seller, rounded up to the nearest dollar for each contract note. Other charges include the 0.00565% trading fee, 0.0027% SFC transaction levy, 0.00015% AFRC transaction levy and the 0.0042% HKSCC stock settlement fee. The HK$2 minimum and HK$100 maximum settlement fees were removed in June 2025. Brokerage and platform fees vary by broker.

Before trading, calculate how much the share price needs to rise for you to break even. For small trades, fixed minimum commissions and levies can make up a high proportion of the transaction value, effectively increasing costs. Long-term investors trade less frequently and are relatively less affected by trading costs, so they should focus more on fundamental analysis of companies.
