Understanding Statutory Holidays and Public Holidays
In Hong Kong, public holidays (commonly called \"bank holidays\") and statutory holidays (commonly called \"labour holidays\") are two different leave systems. Bank holidays total 17 days each year, covering all public holidays. Statutory holidays are fewer in number, and the Government is gradually increasing them from 14 to 17 days, eventually aligning with public holidays. Not all employees are automatically entitled to 17 days off; it depends on the employment contract and the applicable holiday system.
The difference in holiday days directly affects employees' entitlements. If an employer only grants statutory holidays, employees will have fewer days off each year than the public holiday total. Although these extra days may not be paid in cash, the number of holidays is an important factor when calculating holiday pay or comparing job offers, especially for shift workers or daily-rated staff.

Before signing an employment contract, confirm whether the company follows statutory holidays or public holidays, and whether extra public holidays are given as time off in lieu or pay. If a statutory holiday falls on a rest day, the employer must arrange another day off. Understanding these details helps you evaluate a job offer or negotiate remuneration more comprehensively.
